Bungaree was once a junction station ( to the Bungaree Racecourse Line)and an important crossing loop. The Line to the racecourse was abolished in 1953, while the station closed to passengers in 1982 and all its remains vanished in 1987 or 1988. A longer loop was built some kilometres away eastwards towards Melbourne, and the old station site is now part of an extended loop on the RFR line to Ballarat – The mainline was diverted as part of that project. It was a classic large building, where except for the built in signal bay, was a standard later design used throughout Victoria, with some minor variations. Very few types of this building remain today. The ones that do would mostly remain on the Mildura line.
The photos in our gallery date back to 1986. Yard diagrams showing its interesting history as a junction and sizeable station yard can be downloaded from Andrew Waugh’s VR history Site. Some 2007 views of the former station site can be found at Ross Thomsons Vicrail Stations site
