Gheringhap to Warrenheip

Part of one of first mainlines built in the state to connect Ballarat with Melbourne via Geelong. The line to Ballarat was opened in 1862 and built built to a high standard, including double track and magnificent bluestone buildings. This line was the only connection between Ballarat and Melbourne, until a more direct route to Ballarat was built in 1889.  Work to turn the line into a single track started in 1892, but it was some 40 years before the work was completed. The line eventually reached the centres of Maryborough, Dunolly, Ouyen and Mildura.  Passenger trains serviced the line until 1978, when the railmotor that was used on the service was withdrawn. The line still saw plenty of passenger trains after this time, but they did not stop at any of the stations. The Dimboola pass typically used this line to avoid the Parwan Bank. Passenger movements ceased in 1993.  There is more information on Wikipedia for this line.
