Ballan

Ballan Station opened in 1887 connecting that town with Ballarat. It was not connected  to Melbourne until 1889 when the direct route from Bacchus Marsh was competed. In addition to the station and platform,  Ballan once had a four road yard, signal box, goods shed and a turntable. The turntable was removed in 1967, and two of the sidings were removed by 1988. The loop was removed in 1996, and the signal box was closed, making Ballan no longer available for crossing trains. Views of the station from 2002 and 2007 can be found here

Yard diagrams of Ballan, showing the changes at the station,  from Andrew Waughs VR History site, can be downloaded here, and there is some line history and images at Vicsig.

A photo of the yard from 1966 taken during a ‘Farewell N Class’ tour is viewable at Les Browns Train Pics site.
